About the trust

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust is a large acute hospital Trust in the south east of England. The Trust was legally established on 14 February 2000 and provides a full range of general hospital services, and some areas of specialist complex care to around 760,000 people living in the south of West Kent and the north of East Sussex. It also provides specialist care to a wider population. This includes ophthalmology, stroke and sexual health services.

The Trust provides specialist cancer services to around 1.9 million people in Kent, Medway and East Sussex, via the Kent Oncology Centre at Maidstone Hospital, and at Kent and Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury. The Trust also provides outpatient clinics across a wide range of locations in Kent and East Sussex.

The Trust employs a team of over 7000 full and part-time staff. Its core catchment areas are Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells and their surrounding boroughs, and it operates from two main clinical sites: Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury. The latter is a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) hospital and provides wholly single-bedded ensuite accommodation for inpatients.

Tunbridge Wells

Tunbridge Wells Hospital in Pembury is the first NHS hospital in England to provide en-suite, single rooms for all inpatients. The hospital is seen nationally as an example of best practice in the design of patient-safe facilities and has attracted widespread international interest.

It is a designated Trauma Unit, undertakes the Trust’s emergency surgery and is the main site for Women’s and Children’s, and Orthopaedic services. The Education Centre at Tunbridge, with its full resuscitation simulation suite, enables the Trust to offer excellent clinical training. Construction work on a new six storey medical student accommodation and teaching building is underway.

The hospital is a short distance from Tunbridge Wells town centre and there are good public transport links with buses running to the hospital seven days a week.
